The building that we welcome you into has some stories to tell. The Alfie’s building, 400 square feet, was the first bank in Licking County, originally on West Main Street in Newark. It was built in 1845 and became known as the “Little Bank that gave picnics!”. Mr. Smith, the bank teller, would often provide lunch picnics to depositors. The building moved to its current location in 1943.

Who’s Alfie?

The name Alfie is short for Alfred Avery. Alfred originated from Granville, Massachusetts, and came to Granville, Ohio, in the early 1800s, shortly after Granville had been founded. He purchased the property of 221 E. Broadway in 1837. Mr. Avery displayed his love for Greek architect when he built the house in 1842. The house has served as his residence, a fraternity house, a sorority house, and now serves as the Robbins-Hunter Museum, which houses a fine collection of local history.

The museum has a tribute to Homer, Ohio’s Victoria Woodhull. She was a pioneer for women’s rights as she became the first woman to own a newspaper, the first woman to hold a stock brokerage, and the first woman to address Congress. Victoria became the first woman to run for President of the United States against Ulysses S. Grant in 1872, with an African American running mate, Frederick Douglas.
